Speed Reading Tests

Important Points About Tests

A test is designed to assess exactly how well a person can read English. There are many venues for taking tests including traditional classrooms and online versions. According to some statistics, the average reading speed in the United States is approximately two hundred words every minute. When taking tests online, you should find them organized simply. All that is required for the test is for the speed reader to read a passage of text once the start button has been pressed. After a designated amount of time, such as twenty seconds for example, the test will stop exactly at the place where you have stopped reading the passage. Your speed results are generally displayed immediately upon completion of the test.

Reading on a Computer Screen Versus Plain Old Paper

Once you have taken any of the tests, you will have some good insight into your reading speed. There are both paper based tests as well as online versions. If you choose to take the online test, you should be aware that typically reading from a computer screen can be slower than reading text from a book.

However, it is necessary in the technology driven world we live in, to be capable of reading faster whether the text is displayed on paper or a computer terminal. The benefits of effective from material on a computer screen is extensive considering the massive amounts of communication received over the internet including online mail and web surfing and career related functions.

Measuring Speed and Comprehension

Speed reading tests are intended to measure your speed, but not necessarily your comprehension. At a minimum, a speed reader should work to achieve a rate of three hundred words per minute. More important than the actual reading speed is to ensure a speed reader is capable of comprehending as well as retaining the material they have just read.

Very often people are excellent at remembering exactly what they might have read, while other speed readers struggle significantly with this component. A goal after obtaining word reading speed through tests is to focus on your comprehension and retention levels of material. Once you have completed a passage, review it in your mind to ensure you have captured the basic points. This may be painful at first, but eventually will develop in to an effective skill.

For speed readers, there are many different courses available to teach the basics of speed reading. The subsequent tests can help guide a reader towards a better understanding of their reading speed, but reading comprehension and retention are far more valuable than speed alone. tests only take a few minutes of your time, but it is important to invest time in preparing for these tests and using the result to improve your speed and comprehension skills. Improving your reading efficiency is likely to improve your overall knowledge capacity.
